5 Things I Loved About Last Week- January 1!

Thanks @colbysharp for the great idea for a regular reflection post!

Last week I loved:

5. Food- I was in the US all last week and ate out a lot! One thing I learned about me is that I am a food critic. I usually think that I am a very non-fussy eater, but this week taught me that I can be very critical. I had Thai food three times and only loved it once (and Thai is one of my favorite cuisines). My favorite restaurant meal was at Captain Marden’s in Wellesley, MA (http://www.captainmardens.com/). They serve great, simple seafood. I had delicious New England clam chowder and lobster tails- yum! Of course the evening was also special because I shared it with my sons, mom, aunt, and uncle. Another favorite (lunch- twice!) was Kupel’s Bakery (http://www.kupelsbakery.com/) where I had the Tom Brady- a toasted poppy seed bagel with cream cheese, lox, tomato, onion, and salt-ahhh! We also bought bagels to take home, so I had bagels other days as well. I did not even realize how much I miss real bagels!

4. Time– I have been off school since December 19th and I am appreciating the gift of time. I have been able to loll around without any set schedule. Sometimes I am not very good at relaxing, but I have been reveling in free time this week.

3. Books– I had the happy occasion to be at at a book store 5 times! This does not count my airport book store visits- of course I was at book stores there too! Yahoo for me! I read a bunch of books and bought a bunch too. Happily the books I have bought have all made it back to Berlin safely.

2. Home– Home sweet home. I rang in the New Year in Berlin, snugly tucked up in my bed, since I had just arrived back from Boston. It felt great to be home! My cats were happy to see me. The mess I left behind is still there staring at me, which gives me some focus for the remaining days of break. I am getting a bit freaked out by the fact that this may be my last year in Berlin. I have not made any definite plans yet, but 2014 may be the year that I move homes:/

1. Family– I feel so lucky that I was able to spend a week and a half with my family. I stayed at my mom’s with my two sons. I got to visit with my dad and his wife, my sister and her family, and my aunt and uncle. Living so far away from my family is a challenge and I really value the time I do get to spend with family members. I know there is a lot I miss by being so far away and being there helped to fill some of that gap.

The week ahead will be a crazy combination of vacation and back to school. It is funny that today feel like a Sunday, but it is Wednesday. I have 5 more days off (including today) and I have lots I want to do in that time. When it is back to school we start with a two day all school inservice on differentiation/inclusion.

Happy 2014!
