Everybody Knows
Everybody knows the weather report here in Phnom Penh,
It’s going to be hot,
Although the locals consider December and January cool or even cold,
Everybody knows that in February it gets hotter,
and hotter,
and by April, just when you think it cannot get any hotter,
May comes, and with it rainy season,
Dramatic rain- thunder, lightning, streets flooded, houses too,
Everybody knows it is coming.
Except right now it is raining (and it’s pouring),
and it is the third day in a row,
dark clouds have threatened,
the wind has whipped the tree branches to and fro,
“Is that rain or wind?” we asked during our team meeting—-
It was rain, but only a bit,
Would we make it home before the big rain started?
A few hours later the storm truly moved in.
Everybody knows the rainy season starts in May,
Until it starts in March…

There’s something especially ominous in this post, Erika. It’s not only a rain storm which can be grey and gloomy, but also one that’s happening when it shouldn’t. I appreciate the lead up and the mood in this piece!
The weather in PP sounds a lot like Bangkok. When that rainy season hits, it’s like no other! Wonder if your early rain is a fluke or an indication that the patterns are charging…
